In this session we learned about a technique many concept artists use: Paintovers. This process involves creating a 3D render or taking a photograph, and applying 2D assets in post production, for example, rendering an un-textured vehicle in Maya and overlaying a metallic texture onto it using Photoshop. This is a useful way of quickly developing an idea with form without having to produce everything from scratch. In our class we attempted this method:
Original
With the texture and burn tool applied
Then we were encouraged to put our own things to it
I can see this technique being very useful to produce 3D concepts in the future.
