Life Drawing Task 13

Quick sketches first:

Then for this I tried to emphasize the tones on the model, but I didn't seem to add enough definition and contrast:

Next we turned the lights off, and had the only light in the room be the radiator for the model, I tried the shading again and I feel it turned out a lot better:

For this last part I focused on the legs of the model to practice shading with the extreme light:

Out of the last two I feel the last is better, I enjoyed trying out extreme lighting and how it wraps around the body, I do however need to practice on defining the tones better, but other than that the shading in extreme lighting shows that I do have a basic understanding.

Digital Painting 1

In our first week, we were instructed to digitally paint the robot below, being given the advice of paint large and add smaller details later, personally I feel I could've done better:

Our next attempt at digital painting involved going over existing lineart, and applying colour and shade to it, I feel that this came out well, and I like the use of coloured lighting:

For one of our homework assignments, we had to take a mech silhouette and add form to it by giving shading in a limited palette. We then made it appear that they were lined up into the distance, which is an effect that I like; I also feel that I could've added more detail to this however:

We then had another go at painting from a reference image, where we learned the importance of keeping the painting proportionate, as well as using the right colours:

We did this again and producec the following result, this time we had more focus on judging the colours by eye and using layers to make adjustments easier:

I hope to apply these skills to future digital works that I make, and refine my own style with it.

Battle Arena Statue: Head and Hands

Following some tutorials, I have created a head and a hand, however the ear is not the same as what I intend for my final model, and will be changed, as well as altering the face shape and body.

Steampunk Design Project

For this project we needed to create something that would belog in a steampunk setting (a form of science-fiction that involve steam as the primary source of power, usually set in a late 19th century styled setting) I created 2 moodboards, first of which is of sallon girls, as I have an idea to create one in this type of genre.

Then for my second moodboard I went and gathered some steampunk outfits, interestingly a few of these outfits are really close to saloon girl fashion:

For these design ideas I had trouble trying to implement the steampunk aspect, as it's full of small details, gizmos and little accessories. After drawing ideas for the character I combined the elements I liked into one final design, and gave the character a steam-powered robotic arm to make the design more interesting and look more than just a regular real-life saloon girl.

I feel there may be some room for improvement such as adding more complexity to the arm, maybe adding some more steampunk assets and adding something around the lower-half of the character in order to balance the design a bit better. Overall however I like the look of this design, and the colour scheme seems to flow well.

Life Drawing Task 12

Like the start of every session we did quick sketches:

Then we did 2 drawings, where we had to experiment with at least 2 different media on the same image, the first was blue and purple crayon:

Then I used orange and green felt tip:

After this we practiced drawing the model's feet:

I feel that drawing feet was more difficult than hands, and I struggled to gain the correct shape (although the one in red looks pretty good). I also really like the second mixed media drawing as the colours compliment each other as well as clash enough to give a solid contrast.

Concept Art Practice: Mutated Fish

In this session we were encouraged to produce a number of mutated fish concepts, as concept artists in the game industry normally produce a lot of concept designs, take feedback and develop ideas by making more art until the final one is decided.

My Personal favorite is the top-left puffer fish, the one just below it with the two legs and the grey one on the right.

Paintovers

In this session we learned about a technique many concept artists use: Paintovers. This process involves creating a 3D render or taking a photograph, and applying 2D assets in post production, for example, rendering an un-textured vehicle in Maya and overlaying a metallic texture onto it using Photoshop. This is a useful way of quickly developing an idea with form without having to produce everything from scratch. In our class we attempted this method:

Original

With the texture and burn tool applied

Then we were encouraged to put our own things to it

I can see this technique being very useful to produce 3D concepts in the future.

Battle Arena: Statue Concept

For my battle arena I need a statue, and I decided to compile a moodboard of images related to godess and knight statues, as well as perhaps a mage character.

From this moodboard, I sketched up a design, and from this I produced a model sheet that I will reference when I begin modelling.

The statue's texture of stone is still unplanned, hence the model sheet being left white.

Human Anatomy: Muscles

Following on from drawing the human skeleton, I have gone a layer up and I am now going to look into the muscles. Like before I am going to begin by sketching some key areas using research.

Here I put in some detail as to what these area look like up close, and labelled a few also, I then went on to do a diagram of the muscles similar to the skeleton:

In this diagram I did a quick paint up and labelled the key areas in a clear full view for easier reference when I look over anatomy basics.

Life Drawing Task 11

Fisrt, the quick sketches:

After this, we used our knowledge of the different muscle groups to draw and label the model:

After labeling, we practice drawing hands, using either our ones or the models. I used mine and practiced by drawing a rectangular base shape of my hand pose and added small details afterward:

I feel that this method of using blocks to get the basic hand shape (with an actual reference) can make a very accurate drawing of a hand, and I'm quite happy with how these came out considering the difficult nature of hands.

Life Drawing Task 10

Just like every task, here are some quick sketches to start off with:

After this we used different media and drew the full figure:

After this we focused on drawing the model's face, for this I tired pencil and charcoal:

I feel thatsome of the model's facial features are shaped right, but them alltogether don't form a believable face, but I do feel that this was good practice in drawing a real face.

Life Drawing Task 9

Firstly, we did our practice sketches:

After these, we were tasked with drawing the full body and had to label the areas of key bones, as lining up our research of the human skeleton and applying it to a live model is good practice:

After this, we did another full body drawing with any medium we desired, however mine came out a bit too faint to be picked up by my phone camera:

For the last part of this session we had to focus an a single area and draw it in detail, we did this 3 times:

Although i'm disappointed with the faintness of the second one and the hand of the last one, I like the shape and detail put into the first one despite experimentation with showing highlights.
